Active basses put the EQ knobs etc. right on the bass. This makes it handy to change tone while playing. How many controls are there depends on the bass. Active basses drive long cables better without losing signal or tone. Active basses often (but not always) have higher output which reduces hum pickup.
A short simple answer: Passive bass is plug & play, it requires no batteries or external power source. Active basses mean usually they have a preamp on board that requires power, usually from a 9 volt battery. Occasionally it can be active pickups which require the power, but usually it’s the preamp. The main difference between the active and passive inputs on your amp is gain. Passive pickups are quieter, so they need more gain to get the volume up.
A low impedance signal will suffer less signal loss or coloration in the instrument cable than a high impedance signal (passive basses). The result is a more open sound because there is less loss of highs. Active circuits don't have to be louder, on my bass active mode is no louder than passive.

One can produce beautiful tones with active and passive basses. Basses with no batteries in them whatsoever can produce lovely tones, especially in the studio. I've found that active basses shine a little stronger in live situations. A bass with an active preamp you can bypass is a sweet way to go. Nice to have options.
Radial PZDI is essentially a J48 with switchable input impedance (220, 1meg, 10meg) and also the thru can be switched from parallel to buffered so the piezo is truly buffered instead of being loaded improperly if your amp does not provide enough impedance. The Countryman's thru is parallel rather than buffered.

And keep in mind they are basses that cost thousands of dollars that are active only. Passive mode can be a nice option, but really it is just a preference.As far as active or passive, maybe you should pick a player who's slap tone you really admire, and see whether they play active or passive basses. I don't slap alot, but when I do, I prefer passive basses because they, IMHO, produce a smoother slap tone that to my ears sounds "funkier" and smoother. Sep 15, 2007 #11.
